A couple of hours #flyfishing #trout #riverfishing
A Couple of hours.
A busy time in the workshop, but thankfully there are a few streams nearby so I can still get out if only for a couple of hours.
The cold North Westerly wind continues to blow and keep the day time temperatures down, one small plus is that the hatches have slowed down and there are still a few Mayfly about, although the fish seem to make splashy rises to them and often miss the fly, or I miss them…
Picked up a few fish on a nymph and a few fish on a size 14 Sparkle Dun.
So a pleasant if brief trip to a local stream.
The rod used was a 7ft 4wt LB Special cane rod

An interesting and challenging day on a new stretch of water. It’s a beat nearby so I was as interested in catching fish as I was having a good look at it and getting an idea of the pools and runs. There weren’t many fish rising but one spot had a few steady rising fish. The cast was a bit awkward which meant the drift wasn’t ideal, and it was just one of those days where things just didn’t qui...

It was an optimistic drive past Abergavenny, the Cherry blossom was out and many of the trees were in their early leaf green. As I drove on up the valley of the Usk spring slowly rolled back and by the time I crossed over in to the Wye valley it was obvious that it does take about two weeks for spring to make it over the Epynt and in to Wye. There were still some signs of spring though so it wa...

A short session on a wooded Westcountry river. After the recent hot weather a forecast cloudy day seemed to be a good time to get out for a few hours. A Little More Water. Mid-day in Mid August probably isn’t the ideal time to be fishing, especially when it’s blazing sunshine. However, with the rivers in good condition for the first time in a while I thought I’d get out for a few hours. The old boys used to say that the trout season doesn’t really start until the Hawthorn are in flower. Early April it was looking like an early spring with green shoots and daffodils showing. Then came the east winds and slowed everything down. Finally in early May it looked like nature wasn’t going to wait any more and the Hawthorne started to flower. An early season fly fishing trip to Mid-Wales. The rivers were running high, but clearing so thought I'd give it a go. Fished a large March Brown swung with a tungsten nymph on the point. Bumped a couple of fish, but nothing stuck. A few fly came off the water around mid-day, but very little activity. I’ll get out again soon down in the Westcountry where things are starting to move. Hi Luke, love your videos. Just come across your channel via Barbless Flies. I'm just getting into river fishing after mainly fishing stillwaters. I had one or two fish recently on wets / spiders on the Ribble, but missed quite a few takes. If you don't mind me asking, do you recommend striking as soon as you feel the take or give the fish more time?

    • @bannisterrods
      @bannisterrods 26 днів тому

      Hi Mike. Glad you enjoy the videos. When to strike is an interesting one, and a bit tricky.. I won't worry too much about missing fish, as often as not I think the fish hasn't properly taken the fly. The hook has to be in the fishes mouth to actually hook it. So if the fish bites the back of the fly you'll feel a pull but have little chance of actually hooking it, and if the fish takes the whole fly into it's mouth and turns it will pretty well hook itself. Generally if I feel a fish pull I will pull back. Hope that's of some help, and no doubt other people will have different opinions. The best thing is to go fishing and enjoy the day, sometimes you'll hook every fish that takes, others you'll bump every one. Most days it will be somewhere in between.
